Crowley Maritime Corp.’s $8.5 million renovation of its Jacksonville headquarters earned it recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Crowley received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver Award. The LEED certification met standards for the interior of a commercial building.

The company’s five-story, 110,000 square foot building is in the Regency Square mall area, located off the Southside Connector. Crowley has about 900 employees in the Jacksonville area. The company operates ships and marine services internationally.

The update lighting system cut electric use by 55 percent compared to the previous system, according to the company. Crowley also recycled old materials and donated the company’s used furniture to schools, charities and business.

Other features that garnered LEED recognition were installing bicycle racks, putting carpool parking spaces in convenient locations for those commuters, Energy Star appliances, and reduced-water bathroom fixtures.
